CONDUCTOR Steve Tubb, players and supporters went wild with excitement when Chalford Band was announced as first prize winners in the second section at the Winter Gardens, Weston-super-Mare on Sunday (May 19, 2002).

Steve had promised a good result if the band played the test piece Diversions as well on stage as in the bandroom and he was proved right.

The performance of Philip Sparke's fine variations on an old Swiss folk tune went well and adjudicator Derek Greenwood peppered his written remarks with the word "good" all the way through.

The Weston own choice contest always attracts quality bands. Mr Greenwood said he was not expecting such a high standard and he noted that all conductors had chosen pieces they could handle.

Seven bands had entered the second section but unfortunately three withdrew though there was still stiff competition. Chalford was drawn last and had some good acts to follow but proved the best. The adjudicator said the placings were close but it was the winning band's interpretation and expression that had won the day.

When Steve went on stage to receive the Bailey Trophy and £130, the adjudicator told him it was a splendid performance which he had much enjoyed.

No-one was more pleased with the result than 18-year-old Kieron Portbury, who was making his contest debut with the senior band on Bb bass, having been promoted from the training band.

The adjudicator's written remarks were:

"Lacks detail in semiquavers to open but some nice sounds. (24) is good. Theme could have more of a lilt to it but good dynamics. Good style around (9). This is good.

Variation II: Sensible tempo and good style. It's all very clean. I hear everything.

Lento. Could be quieter but a nice sound. (210) more legato from cornet. Some nice sounds before (26) This is good. Quieter at (238). Good horn at (244). Good technique in vivace. Very neat at (281).

(327) Lacks detail in cornet but minims are good. (359) is good. Some lovely playing throughout. Well done. "

Results: 1 Chalford 186 points, 2 Lympstone 185, 3 Cwmbran 184. Trophy for best euphonium: Lympstone.
